David Hughes has spent more than five decades under discipline.
He began martial arts at 6 years old. At fourteen, he broke his hip and was told he would likely walk with a limp- and never return to competitive athletics.
He chose a different outcome.
What followed was not luck. Not talent. Not shortcuts. It was decades of standards.
David became:
A National Champion in Sport Karate
An international Full-Contact Competitor
A National-level Strength Athlete
A World Champion in Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Grappling
A 9th-Degree Black Belt with nearly 50 years under legendary Grandmasters
A Former member of the original West Cost Demo Team
A Lifelong coach and mentor to thousands.
He is also a former collegiate national strength athlete in powerlifting and bodybuilding during the drug-tested era and a licensed tactical trainer.
Now 61, David continues to train 6-7 days per week. His approach Centers on heavy weight training performed for high repetitions-a rare and demanding method that builds strength, durability, and resilience without surrendering to age.
While managing fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis, he refused to negotiate his standards.

Different decades. Roughly 30 years apart. Same standards. Training was never about chasing a physical peak. It was about building strength, skill, and resilience that would last. The movements may look similar. What matters is how they were trained — and why they still work. Being a Mr. Health & Fitness finalist has simply given me a platform to talk about sustainable, lifelong training. This is how I coach.
